Can Rainbow Window Film Be Removed & Reapplied?

All window films can be removed, but not all of them can be reapplied. It depends on the type of film and the way it’s designed to cling to glass and stay in place. If the ability to remove the film and reapply it is a concern, be sure to express this to your tinting company during the beginning of the installation process. Whether you intend to reuse it or not, window film can be removed one of two ways. You can either do it yourself using DIY methods or have a professional do it for you.

The Removal Process

If you decide to go the DIY route and remove your window film application from your Salt Lake City home on your own, you can do it by soaking the film with soapy water. Just follow these steps:
1. Fill a spray bottle with liquid soap and warm water. Shake it up a bit to mix the solution. Spray the film with the mixture until it is completely soaked. Place a plastic covering like a garbage bag or painting drop sheet over the film to hold in the moisture.
2. Wait about eight hours, then remove the plastic sheet or bag. Slowly, starting at one corner, peel the film away from the glass. If needed, you can use a plastic scraper or credit card to pull back any stubborn areas that stick.
3. Remove any remaining adhesive with Windex or a citrus-based cleaner and a soft cloth.

Which Films Can Be Reapplied?

Window films that are “static cling” can be removed and reapplied. However, most adhesive films will need to be discarded after they are removed as they cannot be reattached.
